When looking at art, what does the term "Masters Edition" refer to?
I have seen a print that is considered a "Master's Edition". What exactly does this refer to? Is it strictly a marketing tool?
I believe it is just a marketing tool and a way to make a piece retain a certain higher "resale" value, as Master's Editions are usually signed and numbered in a series, usually a low number, like for instance...1/46 and there were only 50 done, would be worth more than a painting or print that was done in a high number series...like 1/1500 out of 3000. Anyway, if it is a painter like Kinkade it wouldn't be worth as much as a deceased artist, or a artist who was considered a "Master" of his particular time period.
