Hayley Turner insists that girl power remains undimmed

Women jockeys have had an unflattering press recently but Hayley Turner remains defiant. Turner, the first of her gender to ride 100 winners in a calendar year, now has a Royal Ascot winner for the Queen in her sights and, yesterday, she launched a spirited defence of female riders.

Turner was back in her home town of Nottingham yesterday and even had time to indulge her addiction for buying shoes before riding. With 27 winners this year, she has recaptured the momentum lost during an enforced absence of almost five months in 2009.

Setting aside her own thriving career, Turner insists that a bad month for the distaff side - including a lengthy non-trier ban for Charlotte Kerton, a first-ride embarrassment for Laura Probert and a weighing-room fight between Kirsty Milczarek and Sophie Doyle - should not give ammunition for the misogynist tendency still lurking within racing.

"Guys make the same mistakes," Turner, 27, said. "I see no reason why it should be portrayed as a girl thing. These things happen more to the blokes, because there are many more of them riding, but you don't hear so much about it.

"I definitely believe that the girls are still moving forward in the sport. I'm not saying there will be a champion in the near future but there are plenty riding really well."

Racing lost precious marketing material when Turner was sidelined by a stalls injury last spring, just when her profile was soaring. "It was very frustrating because I didn't think I should have been off that long. I lost the chance to build on the previous year. I felt I was fit within two months and could certainly have been back within three. You do go backwards, because trainers have to use other people and usually won't change back, but I did keep a lot of support."

Her principal supporter is Michael Bell, whose Newmarket yard houses the royal colt that could take Turner to new heights next month. Tactician is to run in the King George V Handicap at Ascot after winning for Turner at Newbury last month with the Queen in attendance.

"It was surreal, walking back into the winner's enclosure with the Queen waiting," Turner said. "She's very knowledgeable about her horses and seemed to enjoy talking about it. It's very exciting having the chance to ride a winner for her at the royal meeting."

Turner's hopes of a credible Derby mount vanished with the mystifying failure of Prompter in the Dee Stakes. "My main target for this year is to ride in the big races but I think my bubbles have burst for the classics," she said. "I need to find a good two-year-old for next year now."

Bell, however, will still be represented in the Derby after reassessing his reaction to Coordinated Cut's third in the Dante last week. He said: "I was a bit disappointed on the day but I now believe I'd left him a bit short. He'll go for the Derby now."

Who should I start on sunday Chris Johnson or Michael Turner?

Turner has had one really good game but I think Johnson will stay consistent. Help me out

I'd go with Turner. The Buccaneers D can make a lot of people look silly like they did to Turner in week 2. I think he will fair a lot better against the Chiefs D in week 3. While I think the world of Chris Johnson, he still isn't seeing redzone carries LenWhale White is stealing them from him.
